I was born and raised
in Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School in 1969. I then entered
the five year Penn State/Jefferson BS/MD combined program, obtaining my BS degree
in 1972 and my MD degree in 1974 (at the age of 22).
I did a straight medical
internship at Jefferson and then entered a three-year radiation oncology residency
at UCSF in San Francisco, finishing in 1978, spending the last six months as
chief resident. I returned to Philadelphia and practiced as an assistant
professor of Radiation Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania.
I left the U.
of P. in late 1981 and entered into private practice at GBMC in its newly-created Department of Radiation Oncology, which I helped develop and expand into
the center which exists today. I served as vice chair for almost the entire 35
1/2 years I was in practice in Baltimore.
I married Beth in
1981. We have two children: Jenny Graber is an OB/GYN practicing in the
Philadelphia suburbs and the mother of our 4 year old grandson Seth; Daniel is
a lawyer in Manhattan and the father of our 11 month old grandson.
I became involved with
organized medicine early. While in medical school I served as a member of the
national board of SAMA (now known as AMSA) and also served as the first chair
of the AMA's student section. After I moved to Baltimore, I joined the Baltimore County Medical Association board in 1988 and served on several BCMA committees and in multiple officer
roles culminating as President in 1994.
I've also been active in multiple state
organizations serving as President of the Maryland Medical Breast Society (1988-1990), of Smoke Free Maryland (1998-1999), of the Maryland Radiological
Society (2011-2013) and of MedChi (2000-2001) In all these organizations I
also was active on multiple committees, especially in the
legislative/government relations and bylaws areas.
Nationally, I was active in
the AMA, serving as a delegate for the American College of Radiology for 20 years.
While at the AMA, among other committees, I served on the Governing Council of
the Specialty and Service Section for six years, including chairing it in
2007-2008. In addition I have served on the national boards of ASTRO and the
ARRT. My major activities though after serving as MedChi President were in the
American College of Radiology. I served on their National Board for 11 years,
including serving as President in 2013-2014. This past May, I was honored with
the ACR's Gold Medal for my service to radiology and contributions to the
organization.
As far as life now, I
retired in June 2017 and am loving it!!! Beth and I have become snowbirds and
winter in Bonita Springs Florida. I have taken up golf and pre-Covid, enjoyed
traveling in Europe, Africa and South America.
