Dr. Arthur
T. Keefe Jr., retired chief of surgery and staff at Kent & Queen Anne's
Hospital, died of heart failure at his Chestertown home. He was 81.
Dr. Keefe
was born and raised in New London, Conn. He attended the Taft School in Waterville,
CT, and earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University and his
medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia
University.
During World
War II, he served stateside with the Army Medical Corps and was discharged in
1945 with the rank of captain. He completed his surgical internship and
residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York City.
Dr. Keefe moved
to Maryland and became chief of surgery at the Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital
for 25 years and retired in 1980. He also had been the hospital's chief of
staff for several terms. Additionally, he maintained a private practice for a
number of years.
He later
held several positions with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland, including
medical director for 10 years and board member for four years.
His
professional memberships included the American College of Surgeons. He was former
president of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in 1976, and had
been secretary of the Board of Medical Examiners of Maryland.
Arthur T. Keefe, Jr. died
on June 29, 2001 at his home in Chestertown.
