Brian Avin


Dr. Avin was born, raised and schooled in Brooklyn, New York. He attended PS 236, PS 203, James Madison High School, and Hewlett High School. He started running cross country and track in high school, and his passion for running has spanned 50 years. After high school, he decided to leave the big city environment and went to Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio, where he studied pre-med and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree. Other college interests included history and Russian, and he ran cross country, indoor and outdoor track.

Dr. Avin attended Chicago Medical School, where he obtained his Medical degree. He started treating his first patients at Cook County Hospital in his second year of medical school, 43 years ago, and he continues to look forward each morning to taking care of his medical family and interacting with colleagues.  

Dr. Avin was honored with entrance into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society for outstanding performance in Medical School. Chicago was the birthplace of his daughters, Jacquelyn and Lori. From Chicago, he went to pursue his Internal Medicine training at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida where he fell in love with Neurology and completed his Neurology Residency. He is boarded in Internal Medicine and Neurology. While in Miami, he worked four years with a group of physicians who staffed emergency rooms in South Florida.

He moved to Silver Spring, Maryland in 1977, where he established his Neurology practice. After seven years of solo practice he joined forces with the Neurology Center that had offices in Montgomery County and the District of Columbia. He practices in the Silver Spring, Wheaton office with his associates, Dr. Kenneth Eckmann and Dr. Eric Jeffries. He took an active leadership role in the Neurology Center and helped the practice grow and prosper.

Since 1977, he has been a member of the Montgomery County Medical Society and MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society and continues to be an active participant in both organizations. He has a passion for legislative issues and was Chair of the Montgomery County Legislative Committee and Chair of the MedChi Legislative Council. He was awarded the Henry P. and M. Page Laughlin Award for his contributions as Chairperson of the MedChi Legislative Council. He was President of the Montgomery County Medical Society in the heat of the tort reform battles and HMO wars. He was Vice Speaker and Speaker of the MedChi House of Delegates, President-elect of MedChi and now President of MedChi.

He is married to Carole, the love of his life. He has two treasured daughters, their spouses, a step-daughter, a step-son and nine grandchildren. During his Presidency, he will focus on issues that include improving how the Board of Physicians interacts with physicians, implementation of health care reform, health insurance and tort reform, and public health and scope of practice issues. 

Dr. Avin will champion health promotions and health maintenance, for he believes that to effectively control future health care costs, we must prevent avoidable illnesses that lead to chronic disease.
