Charles Henry Ohr was born in Funkstown in Washington
County, Maryland on October 19, 1811. He was educated at Gettysburg College in
Pennsylvania, and received his medical diploma from the University of Maryland
in 1834. He was an attending physician at the Washington County Almshouse from
1832-33 and then practiced medicine in Hancock, Washington County.
Ohr moved to Baltimore in 1843 to practice medicine, but
moved back to Cumberland in 1847. He was a Grand Master of Masons of Maryland
from 1849 to 1851, and then a member of the Cumberland City Council for three
terms. From 1859 to 1866, he was the Mayor of Cumberland, and also a member of
the Maryland State Senate from 1864 to 1867. Ohr also served as the President
of the Fire Insurance Company of Allegany County. He was an acting assistant surgeon in the
Union States Army during the Civil War.
He became the Vice President of the Faculty in 1871-72, and
then President in 1873-74.
