Charles R. Austrian

Charles R. Austrian was born in Baltimore on May 28, 1885. He was educated at Park School in Baltimore and received his BA at Johns Hopkins in 1904 and graduated from the medical school five years later.

From 1910 to 1923, he was an instructor and associate in medicine at Hopkins, becoming a visiting physician in 1915. He held the post of associate professor of medicine from 1923 until his retirement from teaching in 1950.

Dr. Austrian was the medical advisor to the State Director of the Selective Service System and during WWII, he served on the Civilian Mobilization Committee.

He was active in the medical community as the former president of the Johns Hopkins Medical Society, the Baltimore City Medical Society and as President of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in 1943. For many years, he was an active board member at Happy Hills Convalescent Home.

His cultural interests were both wide and deep. He was on the board of Park School, his alma mater. He also served as a board member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and as a trustee of the Peabody Conservatory of Music.

His library at his home at 1417 Eutaw Street was extensive and his reading, both professional and general was broad. As he grew older, he depended more and more on reading as a form of recreation. His sense of social responsibility was reflected in his membership on the State Board of Welfare and he was an outspoken advocate of improvement in hospital facilities and more adequate sanitary systems.

He died as he was on his way to Union Memorial Hospital for a consultation on July 13, 1956.
