Dr. DeWitt Elmer DeLawter graduated from Williamsport High School in Washington County, Md., in 1934. He received an undergraduate degree from Muhlenberg College in 1937 and a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1941.
He was an Army medical officer during World War II, stationed in Puerto Rico, and after the war did his residency at Suburban Hospital. In 1947-48, he was a fellow in endocrinology at the National Institutes of Health.
He was in private medical practice from 1946 until his retirement in 1983.
He remained active professionally after his retirement, serving on the Suburban Hospital board of trustees from 1964 to 2007, on the Maryland Board of Physicians from 1969 to 2007 (serving as president from 1974 to 1976) and on the board of the American Diabetes Association from 1978 to 2007. He served on the teaching staff of the George Washington University School of Medicine from 1948 to 1950 and also taught at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Dr. DeLawter received numerous awards, including the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Montgomery County Medical Society in 1962. Dr. DeLawter served as the President of MedChi in 1972. He died on November 10, 2007.
