Dr. Edward P.
Thomas was born on February 26, 1892 in Buckeystown, Maryland. He was a
graduate of Boys’ High School and received a medical degree from the University
of Maryland.
He was a military
surgeon in the Army Medical Corps in WWI, serving overseas for three years with
the rank of Captain. He was attached to the Evacuation Hospital No. 3, American
Expeditionary Force and was on duty during and after battle, and following the
Armistice with the occupation force in Germany.
In 1920, Dr.
Thomas returned to Frederick and began practice as a surgeon. He became Chair of
the Surgical Staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital and served on the State Board
of Medical Examiners.
Dr. Thomas’s
professional standing was widely recognized throughout Maryland. He headed the
Frederick County Medical Society, as well as being the President of the Medical
& Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in 1940. Additionally, he was active in
local civic organizations, including various Masonic bodies, the Elks and the
local Rod & Gun Club. He was affectionately known as “Dr. Eddie.”
Dr. Thomas’s
health had been declining for some time, but he continued to carry on his
professional duties. He died at home of a heart attack on August 25, 1959.
