Ennalls Martin was born at Hamden, Talbot
County, Maryland on August 23, 1758.
Educated at Newark (Delaware) Academy; and then became pupil of Dr.
Shippen in Philadelphia.
He was a Surgeon's Mate to the Maryland
Line in the American Revolution from June 1, 1777, to February 16, 1780. He
completed his M.D., at the University of Pennsylvania, 1782, and then began a
practice at Easton in 1782.
Dr. Martin was an Orator in the Medical and
Chirurgical Faculty, 1807. He received an M.D., (Honorary) from the University
of Maryland in 1818. He was President, Medical and Chirurgical Faculty from
1815-20, declining reelection in 1820. Dr. Martin resided in Baltimore for some
years, about 1815-20, coinciding with his presidency at the Medical &
Chirurgical Faculty.
He authored “An Essay on Epidemics of the
Winters of 1813 and 1814 in Talbot and Queen Anne's Counties, Maryland,”
Baltimore, 1815. He was a devoted and scientific agriculturalist.
From his brusque manners he was called the “Abernethy
of Talbot.” Of great bodily strength, tenacious of his opinions; delighted in
surgery, a zealous follower of Dr. Rush.
Ennalls Martin died at
Easton, December 16, 1834, leaving a large family.
