Franklin Buchanan Smith was born in Frederick, MD on April 10, 1856. He received both AB and AM degrees from Princeton University, in 1876 and 1879 respectively. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1878.
Dr. Smith was the Health Officer for Frederick County, and also the City of Frederick. He was a surgeon at the Montrose Hospital and surgeon to the Baltimore & Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroads. He was a member and Vice President of the Board of Medical Examiners of Maryland, and had been since its founding in 1892.
According to the Princeton Alumni Weekly, Dr. Smith was very influential in Frederick County, with the county enacting almost every health law and sanitary improvement he recommended.
Dr. Smith was a member of the AMA in Maryland, and was President of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in 1910-1911.
Dr. Smith was a member of several fraternal organizations, including the Masons, the Order of the Elks and the Order of the Odd Fellows.
Dr. Smith died on November 5, 1923 from typhoid fever, which he is thought to have contracted from a patient.
