Guy Steele was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland on June 12, 1861. His father, Thomas Steele, was a local physician. He graduated from the
University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1897.
In WWI, he served on the
local draft board in Dorchester County and saw duty with the US Navy. For fifteen
years, he was Chief of Staff at the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital, which he helped
found. He was also a former Cambridge Health Officer, and the jail physician.
As a member of the Sons of
the American Revolution, he helped mark many of the deserted graves of
Revolutionary War soldiers in Dorchester County graveyards.
Dr. Steele was the president
of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty in 1917, and was acting surgeon of the
US Public Health Service.
Until age 83, Dr. Steele was
still performing major surgeries. Several months before his death, Dr. Steele
fractured his hip in a fall at his home. He died in Cambridge on October 12,
1956.
