I. Edmondson Atkinson was born in Baltimore on January 23, 1846. He was educated at the School of Letters at the University of Maryland, and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1865. He became a vaccine physician in 1873, and then the Superintendent of Vaccines in 1883.
Dr. Atkinson was an attending physician at the Baltimore General and Baltimore Special Dispensary. For several decades, he also taught at the University of Maryland where he held the positions of Professor of Dermatology, Professor of Pathology, Professor of Materia Medica, Emeritus Professor, and Dean. In 1881, he became the Vice President of the Faculty, and President from 1887-1888. He was also President of the American Dermatological Society.
He was also a consulting physician at Johns Hopkins, a member of the Lunacy Commission of Maryland, and author of an article in "Pepper's System of Medicine."
Dr. Atkinson died in Baltimore on November 26, 1906 at age 60.
