J. Sheldon Eastland

J. Sheldon Eastland was born in Bennington, NY, the son of a pharmacist. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1921 and received his degree in medicine from the University of Maryland in 1925. 
Later that year, he began his internship and residency at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore and spent the next 40 years on the medical staff, eventually becoming Chief of Staff. On his retirement a year before his death, he was honored at a testimonial dinner given by the staff honoring his service.

Dr. Eastland served on the State’s Industrial Accident Commission, as well as the Commission’s medical board for occupational diseases. He became president of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland in 1958, and served as the chair of the Faculty’s committee on diabetes.

In addition, Dr. Eastland served on the board of trustees of the Maryland Blue Shield from 1968 to 1972, and was a delegate from Maryland to the American Medical Association. He  was a member of the Baltimore City Medical Society, the American College of Physicians and the American Diabetes Association.

The year before he died, Dr. Eastland retired from private practice, but continued to remain active as a consultant to several hospitals. J. Sheldon Eastland died at the hospital where he had spent so many years, on April 20, 1973.
