Born in Philadelphia, the first in my family to go to
college, I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. I was the first
person at Penn to receive a BS degree in Computer Science and Engineering, as
computer science was just in its infancy then. I went on to Medical School at
Penn and graduated with my MD degree in 1977. After a residency in Obstetrics
and Gynecology at the State University at Buffalo (where I learned to drive in
the snow, among other things) I moved to Bethesda and started a career in
private practice with an OBGYN group.
I became interested in organized medicine, and became a
member of the Board of the Montgomery County Medical Society in 1988, on which
I still serve. I was President of the MCMS in 1995 and again in 2001. This led
to becoming involved at Med Chi, where I became Speaker of the House in 2000
and President in 2003.
The highlight of my presidency at Med Chi was a protest we
organized in Annapolis against the rising cost of malpractice insurance. We had
over 2000 doctors attend who came from all over the state. It was very
successful and got the attention of legislators who help passed favorable
legislation to help ameliorate the crisis.
Following my work at Med Chi I became involved with my
professional society, ACOG, and presented lectures discussing electronic health
records at their Annual Clinical Meetings. I became the Chair of the Maryland
Section for ACOG.
With the help of our fine Maryland Delegation to the AMA, I
served as a delegate or alternate to the AMA from 1996 to 2015.
Currently I continue to practice Obstetrics and Gynecology
in Rockville and Germantown. Since 2012 I have been employed by the Medical
Faculty Associates of the George Washington University as an Assistant Clinical
Professor. My daily work is the general practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
just as it was in 1981 when I first started.
I am married to Edith since 1977 and have two children, Julie
and David.
