Dr. Kalish earned his B.S. Degree, with honors and Phi Beta
Kappa, from the University of Maryland College Park in 1969 and his M.D. degree
from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1973. He completed his internship, residency and
fellowship in Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland Medical Systems in
1977.
Dr. Kalish is Board Certified in
Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and began his practice in 1977. He is a Fellow of the American College of
Anesthesiologists. He spent most of his career as an Assistant Professor of
Anesthesiology at the University of Maryland Medical Systems and the R Adams
Cowley Shock Trauma Center as well as Johns Hopkins Medicine. Dr. Kalish then went on to earn his Masters
of Business Administration in Health Services Management at Johns Hopkins Carey
Business School, Baltimore, Maryland, in 2006.
Dr. Kalish is an active member of the Maryland Society of
Anesthesiologists serving as their President in 1988-1990 and on the Board of
Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists from 2002 - 2017. For the past 27 years Dr. Kalish has served
on the Statewide Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council (SEMSAC) and
served as their Chair for 8 years. He
served on the Maryland Emergency Medical Services Board from 2008 through 2013,
and 2017 through 2019. For the past 12
years, Dr. Kalish served on the Board of the Committee on Accreditation of
Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP)
representing the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He also served as President of the Medical
Alumni Association of the University of Maryland from 1997 – 1998 and received
their Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
Dr. Kalish is a Past Treasurer of MedChi, The Maryland State Medical
Society, and served on the Board of Trustees from 2001 – 2007, President-elect from 2008-2009, and their 162nd President from 2009-2010. He was
the recipient of the Dr. P. & M. Page Laughlin Award for both Distinguished
Committee Chair in 2005 and Distinguished Board of Trustees Member in 2007. He
was an active member of the Baltimore City Medical Society (BCMS) and served as
President from 1995-1996, receiving their Community Service Award in 1997. He has participated in many Task Forces and
Committees within BCMS and MedChi.
Dr. Kalish has been married to his lovely wife, Michele, for
the past 48 years. Michele is a graduate of the University of Maryland College
Park and served as Co-President of the Alliance to MedChi for two years,
starting and organizing medication take-back programs in Maryland and
distributing information about the Safe Disposal of Medicine. They have two
daughters, Jennifer and Danielle, two sons-in-law, Yechiel and Mike, and three
grandchildren.
