At Johns Hopkins, she is a clinician, an educator, a researcher, and a mentor for medical students, residents, and public health trainees, and a past inductee to the Distinguished Teaching Society of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Dr. Ranasinghe has had a wide range of research interests including physician wellness, disaster medicine, global health and the intersection of climate & human health, chronic disease prevention, clinical informatics, artificial intelligence in healthcare, and value-based care models.
Dr. Ranasinghe is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Preventive Medicine, and the Society of Hospital Medicine.
For two decades Dr. Ranasinghe has been actively engaged with organized medicine at the national and state levels. Her career is dedicated to improving health outcomes for both patients and medical professionals, as well as improving the process of providing care for those in need.
She is a State Delegate representing MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, at the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD) which brings together all medical professions in the United States for collaborative health care policy making for the nation.
Dr. Ranasinghe has been active with the AMA in various capacities. She served two terms on the governing council of the AMA International Medical Graduate Section, a group representing approximately one quarter of all practicing physicians in United States. She served as Section Chair from 2013 to 2014.
Since 2018, Dr Ranasinghe has been an elected member of the AMA HOD’s Council on Science and Public Health. The Council is responsible for supporting the scientific mission of the AMA. Dr. Ranasinghe is the current Vice Chair/Chair Elect of the Council.
Dr. Ranasinghe is a member of the AMA Task Force on Digital Health, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Informatics. The Task Force was established in recognition of the increasing significance of AI in transforming healthcare for patients and physicians.
Dr. Ranasinghe also represents MedChi on behalf of Maryland physicians on the Total Cost of Care Workgroup of the Health Services Cost Review Commission, the independent agency of the State of Maryland. Its mission is to ensure that all Marylanders have access to high-value affordable healthcare.
Dr. Ranasinghe has been engaged with the Baltimore City Medical Society, a component of MedChi, in various leadership positions, including serving as its president in 2017.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ranasinghe has received many recognitions, including the Excellence in Medicine Young Physician Leadership Award from the AMA Foundation in 2007 and was named a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine in 2022.
Maryland has been a pioneer in modern medicine and is home to some of the most prominent medical and healthcare institutions in the nation and the world. MedChi is the nation’s third oldest state medical society. Dr. Ranasinghe is honored to serve as the 177th president of MedChi.
Under Dr. Ranasinghe’s leadership MedChi continues to champion advancements in healthcare across the state, serving physicians and patients in continuing its 225-year legacy of commitment to better health for everyone.
