Whitmer Bennett Firor
was born in Scranton, PA, and moved as a child to Thurmont in Frederick County.
He graduated from Johns Hopkins University where he got a BA in 1923, and from
the Hopkins Medical School in 1927. He practiced radiology for nearly 25 years
and retired in 1974.
After receiving
his medical degree, Dr. Firor served his internship at the Henry Ford Hospital
in Detroit and then his residency at the University of Michigan Hospital. He was
a University of Michigan fellow in radiology in 1929 and 1930, after which me
moved to Baltimore and went into private practice.
During WWII, Dr. Firor
served in the Army Medical Corps, rising to the rank of Colonel. He was
assigned to the 118th General Hospital, a Hopkins unit at Fort Meade. He also
served in the Phillipines.
Dr. Firor was one
of the country’s most well-known specialists in radiology. He was an assistant
professor of radiology at Hopkins School of Medicine, and was the associate
editor of the Yearbook of Radiology for 15 years, and authored many papers in
the field.
He served as Chief
of Radiology at Union Memorial Hospital, Sheppard Pratt Hospital and the old Women’s
Hospital, now part of GBMC. He was also on the staff of Children’s Hospital.
In 1960, Dr. Firor
was elected as President of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty, and was also
the president of the Baltimore City Medical Society.
Whitmer B. Firor died after
a long illness on January 18, 1979.
