William Houston Toulson was born in 1899 in Chestertown and
lived in Roland Park for many years. He received bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from Washington College in Chestertown, and then attended the
University of Maryland Medical School, graduating in 1913.
During
WWI, he served in France as a medical officer with the British Army before the
US entered the war. He later served in the US Army Evacuation Hospital.
After
the war, he returned to the University of Maryland, where he introduced new
surgical techniques that he had learned in the field.
During
WWII,
he was a physician for the Selective Service Administration in Baltimore, as
well as the Veterans Administration.
In 1949, he was elected as President of the Medical
& Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, and President of the Société Internationale D'Urologie. Dr. Toulson was
also a member of the American Association of the Genito-Urinary Surgeons, the
American Urological Association, the American College of Surgeons and the Clinical
Club.
Dr. Toulson was a professor of urology at the University
of Maryland for a number of years, eventually becoming an emeritus professor.
He retired in 1972.
He died in Baltimore on November 15, 1982 after a
short illness.
