William W. Handy was born in Somerset County, Maryland in 1785. He was educated at Washington College in Chestertown, MD, and was a medical pupil of Professors Davidge and Rush.
Beginning in 1817, through 1834,
Handy was the Treasurer at the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty. In 1819, he
received an honorary medical degree from the University of Maryland. He went on
to found the Washington Medical College, which, despite its name, was on
Holliday Street in Baltimore, and later moved to the site of the former Church
Home & Hospital.
From 1827 to 1842, Handy was a Professor of Obstetrics and
Diseases of Women and Children at Washington Medical College.
He became the
Vice President of the Faculty in 1832-33 and then the President in 1851-52. He
died in 1865.
