I entered 49, coincidentally, in 49. In 51 I opted, against the advice of my teachers, to go to Forest Park instead of City College. They felt that doomed my chances at getting into a really good university. Johns Hopkins nevertheless took a chance on me, and my four years there were followed by a Fulbright grant to study history in Germany and by a career in the US Foreign Service with assignments in Nigeria, Somalia, Italy, Croatia and Serbia as well as stints as Director of the Office of Human Rights in the State Department and Senior Inspector in the Office of the inspector General. In 1992 I was the first recipient of the Baker-Wilkins Award for Excellence in the Direction and Management of Overseas Missions. I currently live in Belfast, Maine and am getting ready to teach a course on the life and music of fellow Baltimore native Philip Glass. I fondly remember Ms. Hodes, (English) Miss Patterson (Latin) and a very able young history teacher whose name, unfortunately I cannot recall, but who probably had an outsize influence on me.
