Clotworthy Birnie

Clotworthy Birnie was born on January 13, 1843 at Glen Burn in Carroll County. He was a pupil of Drs. John Swope and W. Chew Van Bibber, and received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1870.
Dr. Birnie was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1896, and served as the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee. He was President of the Carroll County Medical Society, Vice President of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty in 1896 and 1896, and President of the Faculty in 1899 and 1900.
His residence in Carroll County is now part of a country inn. Dr. Birnie was a great-nephew of Upton Scott, the first President of the Faculty. Dr. Scott brought Dr. Birnie's father from Ireland to oversee his lands. After Dr. Scott's death, Dr. Birnie's father moved the family to Taneytown in Carroll County.

Dr. Birnie died in March of 1917.

  1. Hello Meg, What kind of doctor was Dr. Birnie? Clotworthy, while perhaps not the most auspicious name for a physician, might suit a few specialties such as cardiology.
