Dear Friend...

Like everyone else, the Center for a Healthy Maryland has changed and adapted to the new normal. The offices are quiet, with a core group of six people coming in every day to answer phones, take care of mail and handle the other things that can’t be done virtually.

We are keeping busy. One of the Center’s largest projects was the revamp of our website – HealthyMaryland.org. We hope that you will click through and take a look at what we have accomplished. There is a lot of information about the Center and its projects, both old and new.   

• The Center has hosted webinars including The Ethics of COVID-19 with three experts in medicine and law, and even a DINO-ZOOM, a tour of the Hall of Fossils at the Natural History Museum in DC. A virtual tour of Baltimore's historic hospitals is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on December 4th. 
• The Maryland Physician Health Program has morphed from in-person sessions to HIPAA-approved Zoom sessions and with the stress of COVID-19, we are seeing more participants than ever.
• The Maternal Mortality study, which began in the 1940s, is continuing to research the annual maternal deaths in Maryland and parse out trends.
• Over the past year, the Maryland Health Care Coalition Against Domestic Violence continued to refine its new website, and update its educational materials, including information about screening for domestic violence through telehealth. During the pandemic, they shifted trainings and seminars to a virtual platform, and offered CEUs and CMEs.
• Unfortunately, the History of Medicine in Maryland Committee postponed the Annual Hunt History Lecture until 2021. However, the History office has been busy with other projects, including writing the biographies of the 170+ past presidents of MedChi, researching our earliest female members and our 100 founders and presenting a virtual lecture on historic hospitals in the area. Additionally, we are cataloging the art and artifacts collection.

As you can see, despite all of the challenges, the Center for a Healthy Maryland had a very busy and successful year, full of opportunities, education and outreach. As the President of the Center’s Board of Directors, I am asking you to support our programs, just as physicians and friends have done since 1799. Any contribution is welcomed.
