Jacob Edwin Michael was born at Michaelsville in Harford County, on May 13, 1848. He was educated at St. Timothy's Hall in Catonsville, Maryland and then at the Newark Academy in Delaware. He received his A.B. from Princeton in 1871, and his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1873.
Additionally, Dr. Michael studied at Wurzburg and Vienna in Austria in 1873 and 1874. Returning to the United States, he became a demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Maryland from 1874 to 1880, and for the following ten years, he was a Professor of Anatomy. He then became a Professor of Obstetrics from 1890 to 1895.
Dr. Michael was the editor of the Maryland Medical Journal, the President of the Clinical Society, and the Baltimore Medical Society. In 1885, he became the Vice President of the Medical & Chirurgical Faculty and in 1888-1889, he became its President.
In 1896, Dr. Michael became the President of the Alumni Association of the University of Maryland and a lecturer on Early Aid, and the President of the Princeton Alumni Association of Maryland.
Dr. Jacob Edwin Michael died on December 7, 1895.
